What is the BMR Calculator?

The BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Calculator is a lead generation funnel designed for fitness coaches, nutritionists, personal trainers, and wellness businesses. It lets your audience discover exactly how many calories their body burns at rest — and gives them personalized targets for weight loss, maintenance, or muscle gain.

Why it works: People love personalized health data. By offering something genuinely useful, you build trust and capture their contact info naturally.

Perfect for:

  • Fitness coaches and personal trainers

  • Nutritionists and dietitians

  • Weight loss programs

  • Wellness coaches

  • Gym owners

  • Health and fitness bloggers

What Your Leads Experience

When someone visits your BMR funnel, they go through a simple 3-step process:

Step 1: Body Metrics

Your lead enters their basic information:

  • Unit preference — Toggle between Metric (kg/cm) or Imperial (lbs/ft)

  • Age — Required (accepts ages 15-100)

  • Gender — Male or Female

  • Weight — In kilograms or pounds depending on unit choice

  • Height — Single field for metric, or feet + inches for imperial

Step 2: Activity Level

Your lead selects their typical activity level from 5 options:

Activity LevelDescription

Sedentary

Little to no exercise, desk job

Lightly Active

Light exercise 1-3 days per week

Moderately Active

Moderate exercise 3-5 days per week

Very Active

Hard exercise 6-7 days per week

Extra Active

Very hard exercise, physical job, or training twice a day

Step 3: Results

Here's where the magic happens! Your lead sees their personalized results:

Main BMR Display

  • Their Basal Metabolic Rate prominently displayed

  • Labeled as "Calories burned at rest per day"

The Science Behind It

Want to know exactly how we calculate everything? Here's the full breakdown.

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns just to stay alive — breathing, circulating blood, maintaining body temperature, and other basic functions. This typically accounts for 60-70% of your total daily calorie burn.

The Mifflin-St Jeor Formula

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate BMR formula available today:

For Men:

BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) + 5

For Women:

BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) - 161

TDEE: Total Daily Energy Expenditure

BMR tells you what you burn at rest. But nobody lies in bed all day! To get the real daily calorie needs, we multiply BMR by an activity factor to get TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure):

Activity LevelMultiplierExample

Sedentary

1.2

BMR × 1.2

Lightly Active

1.375

BMR × 1.375

Moderately Active

1.55

BMR × 1.55

Very Active

1.725

BMR × 1.725

Extra Active

1.9

BMR × 1.9

Calorie Targets Explained

Based on TDEE, we calculate specific targets:

  • Aggressive Loss: TDEE - 750 calories (creates a 5,250 cal/week deficit ≈ 1.5 lbs loss)

  • Moderate Loss: TDEE - 500 calories (creates a 3,500 cal/week deficit ≈ 1 lb loss)

  • Maintenance: TDEE (no change in weight)

  • Lean Bulk: TDEE + 300 calories (minimizes fat gain while building muscle)

  • Weight Gain: TDEE + 500 calories (creates a 3,500 cal/week surplus ≈ 1 lb gain)

Unit Conversions (for imperial users)

When users select imperial units, we convert behind the scenes:

  • Pounds to kg: weight × 0.453592

  • Feet/inches to cm: ((feet × 12) + inches) × 2.54

Tips for Success

1. Promote the Value, Not the Form

Don't say "Sign up for our newsletter." Say "Discover exactly how many calories YOUR body burns — free calculator."

2. Send Results via Email

Set up an automatic email with the {{Results}} placeholder. Your leads will receive their exact BMR, TDEE, and all calorie targets in their inbox — a handy reference they can save and come back to.

3. Connect Your Email Platform

Integrate with MailerLite, Mailchimp, or ConvertKit to automatically add leads to your email sequences for follow-up nurturing.

4. Use Results as a Conversation Starter

When you reach out to leads personally, you can see their full results in your Contacts dashboard — their BMR, activity level, and all their calorie targets. Use this to personalize your outreach.
